The UK Government have announced that people on Job Seeker’s Allowance “who haven’t found a job once they have been through a work programme will do a 26 week placement in the community.” Four areas will be tested through Jobcentre Plus before the scheme is rolled out in 2013. The four pilot areas are:
- Derbyshire
- Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland
- East Anglia
- Leicestershire and Northamptonshire
These proposals form part of the Government White Paper, The Universal Credit, welfare that works. For more information see a BBC debate on community work and a Guardian article on welfare reform.
