The People’s Budget project has officially launched and is online. In the Brazilian cities where Participatory Budgeting originated the process has been transformative. Tens of thousands of people are involved in the tough decisions about spending priorities for 10-18% of the mainstream budget. PB has had a significant impact on redistributing public services and investment to where it is needed most. The People’s Budget is a new approach to PB in the UK which aims to develop approaches more closely aligned to the original Brazilian models. It is a grassroots campaign, supported by the PB Unit, to persuade local budget holders that we should work together towards involving residents in 1% of the spend of local public budgets.
